Sometimes you want a playground. Sometimes you want a beach. Sometimes… you want both! Luckily, if you’re in the Okanagan, you can have your cake and eat it too. Erm, we mean… you can have your playground, and your sand, too.

Here’s our list (from south to North) of all the beaches in the Central and North Okanagan that do double duty as playgrounds, too. So pack your running shoes and your sand toys. And go play outside! Note: None of these beaches are dog friendly. But for dog-friendly beaches, head on over here!

KELOWNA CITY PARK (DOWNTOWN)

Amenities: Bathrooms βœ” | Shaded grassy areas βœ” | Splash park βœ” | Picnic tables βœ– | Walking to food βœ”

+ Why we love it

Our favourite park in Kelowna. City Park is a large, mature downtown park filled with grassy knolls, quiet picnic areas, large trees, and some fantastic amenities, including a playground, splash pad and large sandy beach. Bring a towel to have a picnic on the grass, or walk to a nearby downtown cafe or ice cream shops. Keep in mind that the play structure is older, and isn't designed for early walkers. Bonus: There are often food trucks parked nearby.

+ Parking

Parking lot that fills up quickly in the summer and on weekends. Downtown street parking available, but we recommend bringing a wagon if you have lots of gear. CITY RATES apply.

Strathcona Park is a lovely grassy spot along the popular Abbott Street bike path, and located adjacent to Kelowna General Hospital. Its central location makes it a favourite spot for many locals, and yet it never seems crowded. There's lots of shady grass to run around, as well as a playground and a wide, open beach. Hightlights include the lovely mature oak trees, and Watermark Cafe (one of our favourite spots in the city!) right across the street.

+ Parking

Small-ish parking lot (city rates) right next to the park. Street parking available if lot is full.

Another great playground right on the beach, this one often doesn't get as busy as Boyce-Gyro, and it's also smaller, which makes it easier to keep track of littler kids. Bring a shovel and spade for digging in the sand, and pack snacks (although it's a short drive to shops and cafes along Lakeshore).
